Dental Assistant often act as a direct helper to the dentist and also expected to regularly monitor patients’ teeth while Dental Hygienist will be more focus on having a private session consultation that doesn’t require much supervision on the patient.
As an overview, Dental Assistant often involve in some side dental duties especially preparatory work for a dentist. Among the notable duties involve getting patient’s profile, sorting of information & records. In addition, they are supposed to help out for disinfecting and organizing all dental instruments before and during a particular dentist performing the dental procedure. To the certain extent, Dental Assistant will also provide the briefing to a patient about the basic info on what is the best way to take good care of their teeth.

Among more specific task of Dental Assistant as below:
(1) Establish a deep understanding of patient’s condition.

(3) To assist in taking and developing x-rays of a patient.
(4) To ensure all instruments & equipment is clean by sterilizing it thoroughly.
(5) To perform some basic office tasks and to provide general teaching to patients on oral care.
Dental Hygienist, on the other hand, performing a more specific task and they work in a very independent way. Very often they perform teeth polishing for patients by clearing all deposits after a thorough examination of patients’ teeth. They need to use a specific tool to perform this task.
Usually, a Dental Hygienist will need to get their Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene that takes a few years to complete. Some states will further require individuals to pass a preset accredited training program. A conservative projection from Bureau of Labor Statistic (BLS) shows that a growth of 19% in dental hygiene field is among the high growth fields compare to others.

(1) Collection & Recording of patient’s Dental & Medical History
(2) Clearing Stains, all deposits accumulated from every surface of teeth
(3) Evaluating Proper treatment needed for a particular patient’s condition.
(4) To apply the right amount of fluorides as a preventive way for further teeth decay.
(5) To perform necessary anesthetics for a dental procedure.
